B.C. Job Market Sees Losses Amid Tariff Concerns
British Columbia’s job market suffered a reversal in July, losing 16,300 positions and erasing gains made over May and June. This decline propelled the provincial unemployment rate by 0.3% to 5.9%. The construction and education sectors bore the brunt of the losses. The national employment picture mirrored this weakness, with Canada losing 41,000 jobs overall in July, though the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.9%.
Economists characterize the broader economic situation as soft, suggesting this weak labour market data could increase pressure on the Bank of Canada to potentially implement an interest rate cut in September.
