Q+A with Sooke Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Deb Schenk
1. Why did your organization become a member of South Island Prosperity Partnership?
The Chamber is enthusiastic about actively contributing to economic development and we envision Sooke playing a vital role in thriving alongside the broader island community.
2. What do you see as key to growing a resilient, prosperous future for Greater Victoria?
I would focus on initiatives like developing renewable energy projects, improving public transportation, and creating and maintaining green spaces.

This includes continuing to support local businesses so we don’t fall victim to losing all our community feel by buying everything online. This can be done by organizing community events, encouraging partnerships between local businesses, and promoting a “buy local” campaign. It’s all about balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
3. What is our region’s secret sauce when it comes to competing internationally to attract quality talent, businesses with household-sustaining jobs and investment?
Our region’s unique charm lies in its close-knit community, where the abundance of volunteers fosters a sense of belonging and importance for everyone. The natural beauty of our green spaces, teeming with wildlife and surrounded by the ocean, contributes significantly. This, combined with a commitment to sustainability, creates an inviting atmosphere that attracts quality talent, businesses offering household-sustaining jobs, and investment on an international scale.
I draw inspiration from the belief that by helping others and preserving our planet, we ensure a legacy of enjoyment and well-being for generations to come.
– Deb Schenk, Sooke Chamber of Commerce Executive Director
4. What challenges are you most invested in helping our community overcome and why?
One key focus is overcoming the bottleneck of accessibility. With just one road, attracting people to the area and facilitating growth for small businesses becomes a hurdle. I believe a solution lies in creating more job opportunities within Sooke itself. This alleviates congestion and bolsters the local economy, fostering a sustainable and thriving community.
5 . What are you most excited about in terms of your organization’s plans and potential?
I’m thrilled about the upcoming initiatives within our organization, particularly the prospect of strengthening connections and supporting small businesses. The excitement extends beyond Sooke, as we aim to help give businesses the options to grow both locally and beyond. Additionally, I look forward to the ongoing collaboration with the Chamber to advocate for policies that address environmental concerns, such as reducing plastic usage. Balancing our commitment to preserving green spaces for community health while fostering business growth is a journey I’m eager to embark on.
6. Is there a specific quote, book, philosophy or idea that has inspired your passion for your work?
The driving force behind my passion for work is rooted in a philosophy centred on altruism, community impact, and environmental stewardship. I draw inspiration from the belief that by helping others and preserving our planet, we ensure a legacy of enjoyment and well-being for generations to come.
7. How do you envision Southern Vancouver Island 20 years from now, what will have changed? What does our future look like?
Looking ahead 20 years, I foresee Southern Vancouver Island at a crossroads. If we aren’t mindful of our approach to business and growth, there’s a risk of it becoming overly busy and overcrowded. However, by prioritizing nature conservation, embracing green infrastructure, and fostering a sustainable economy, I envision a future where our community thrives harmoniously. It’s a delicate balance, but with the right choices, I see a beautiful and united community working together to prosper and grow sustainably.
