Published in The Conversation by Sarah Elizabeth Wolfe (Professor, School of Environment and Sustainability) and Philip Steenkamp (President and Vice-Chancellor) of Royal Roads University, this article argues that universities should adopt a place-based, community-embedded approach to research and teaching, applying their expertise to help local communities prepare for climate risks.
The article cites South Island Prosperity Partnership’s finding that more than 80 per cent of the region’s food comes from off-Island, only 20 to 30 per cent of farmable land is in production, and only three days of fresh food is available at any given time. The authors conclude that the urgency is real and it’s time for Canada’s universities to rethink their priorities and act.
