Victoria and Saanich councils recently moved forward discussions of municipal amalgamation after reviewing a report recommending the merger. In Victoria, Mayor Marianne Alto took the initiative to direct staff to work alongside Saanich to craft a clear and straightforward question about amalgamation for voters.
This development follows the release of a 104-page report by the Victoria-Saanich Citizens’ Assembly, which strongly advocates for the amalgamation of the two municipalities.
The question will come in the upcoming municipal elections, scheduled for October 17, 2026. Additionally, Victoria staff will return to council to determine if more public information is needed to ensure voters can make an informed decision.
